HoLEP: A Revolutionary Treatment for Enlarged Prostate

An enlarged prostate or Benign prostatic hyperplasia, is a widespread condition in older men, leading to urinary issues like frequent urination and weak urine flow. One of the most advanced and effective treatments for BPH today is Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP). This minimally invasive procedure provides long-term relief and is an excellent alternative to traditional prostate surgeries.

What is HoLEP?

HoLEP uses a high-powered laser to remove excess prostate tissue causing urinary blockage. A cystoscope is inserted through the urethra to guide the laser, which enucleates (removes) the enlarged prostate tissue. Unlike older treatments, HoLEP can be used for prostates of all sizes, including very large ones, and ensures minimal damage to surrounding tissues.

Benefits of HoLEP

HoLEP offers several advantages over traditional treatments like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or open prostatectomy. The procedure is minimally invasive, requiring no large incisions, which results in faster recovery, less pain, and fewer complications. The laser also helps to seal blood vessels during the procedure, it significantly reduces the risk of bleeding, making it a safer option, especially for patients at risk of bleeding.

How HoLEP Works

During HoLEP, the patient is under general or spinal anaesthesia. A cystoscope is inserted into the urethra to examine the prostate, and the laser is used to remove the obstructing tissue. The laser not only cuts the tissue but also seals blood vessels to minimize bleeding. After the tissue is removed, the bladder neck is checked, and the prostate is fully enucleated. A catheter is often placed temporarily to help with urine drainage and is usually removed within 24-48 hours.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery after HoLEP is typically faster than traditional surgery. Majority of the patients experience minimal pain and can return to normal activities within a week. Temporary urinary incontinence or urgency may occur but usually resolves within a few weeks.

Follow-up appointments are crucial to track progress and confirm if symptoms are improving.

Who Is a Candidate for HoLEP?

HoLEP is ideal for men with moderate to severe BPH who haven’t found relief with medications or have larger prostates that may not be treatable with other methods. Consulting with a urologist is necessary to determine if HoLEP is suitable based on individual health conditions.

HoLEP provides an effective, minimally invasive solution for BPH, offering long-term symptom relief with fewer risks and faster recovery compared to traditional surgeries.
